The Baker High School wrestling squad got its first regular season opportunity to perform in front of the home fans Tuesday.

The Bulldogs split a pair of dual matches, losing a Greater Oregon League match 62-12 to Ontario before stopping Grant Union 45-22 in a nonleague match.

“Overall we did what we should have done,” said Baker coach Brandon Young.

“Against Ontario it was  acse of Ontario seniors against our freshmen.

“We probably could, and should, have won a couple more matches, but it wouldn’t have made a difference in the team score.

Korey Grende earned the only Baker win on the mat against Ontario, wining by pin in the second round. Grende was leading his opponent 7-2 when he flipped the Ontario wrestler and gained the pin with 1.2 seconds left in the round.

“Grende stepped it up today. He did a good job,” Young said.

Freshman Malaci Knox received Baker’s other win against Ontario, by forfeit at 285 pounds.

Against Grant Union, Baker won eight matches, but only three were on the mats. Grant Union forfeited five weights.

Marco Vela (132) and Matt Siddoway (195) won their matches by fall. Cody Bingham (120) won an 11-5 decision.

Baker returns to the road Thursday, wrestling Payette and Weiser at Weiser.
