Baker wrestlers split duals

PAYETTE — Baker wrestlers split a pair of nonleague wrestling dual matches Tuesday at Payette High School.

Baker defeated the Pirates 37-36 before losing 60-16 against Emmett.

“The team performed better than coaches anticipated,” said Baker coach Brandon Young.

“When you show up for a dual with nine guys you usually don’t come in expecting to win a dual. But that was our mentality going into the Payette dual.”

After exchanging forfeits, Baker was down by 12 points. Toward the end of that dual Baker knew it had two forfeits coming its way at 170 pounds and 182 pounds.

Young said that at 152 pounds that left the Bulldogs trailing 36-30.

“Our fate came down to Chaz Lowry at 152 pounds and team captain Tyler Hertel at 160 pounds,” Young said.

Lowry came away with a 6-2 decision to cut the deficit to 36-33. Hertel then earned several near falls to earn the Bulldogs four team points and the 37-36 win.

“The team did much better and really showed a lot of heart,” Young said.

TheBaker coach said the Emmett dual was tough for the Bulldogs with so few numbers and wrestling back-to-back matches.

“We have some time nnow to heal, get our grades up, and get in better shape as we don’t compete again until the Parma tournament on the 20th and 21st,” Young said.
