Baker wrestlers placed third out of a dozen teams Saturday at the John Rysdam Memorial high school wrestling tournament at Elgin High School.

“We had a great tournament,” said Baker coach Brandon Young.

“It was a two-day tournament so the kids got a lot of mat time in.”

Young said competition was wrestled in pods (pools)Friday. Then, depending on how well the wrestlers did Friday they were placed in a bracket on Saturday.

Seniors Chaz Lowry and Tyson Walton led Baker, placing second at 160 pounds and heavyweight.

Lowry finished 3-2 overall, and Walton 1-2.

“This was the first championship that Chaz had wrestled in,” Young said.

“Tyson wrestled Kyle Yraguen of Vale on Friday and Saturday and lost two very exciting matches, one in triple overtime and the other 1-0.”

Logan Valentine (120), Marco Vela (132), and Henry Shaw (195) placed third for the Bulldogs.

Placing fourth were Cody Bingham (113), Taylor Hawes (145) and Stephen Spenst (182).

Baker returns to action Dec. 27 at a tournament at Pendleton.
