Baker will field a young wrestling squad this season with 11 of the 20 wrestlers competing as freshmen.

“We have 20 kids out, but only eight returning,” said Baker coach Brandon Young.

Just one of the returning grapplers placed last season at regionals — junior Peter Baker, sixth at 170 pounds.

The other returning wrestlers are seniors Thomas Larsen (152) and William Pifher (285); junior Patrick Lee (126); and sophomores Marco Vela (132), Cody Bingham (120), Sean Stanford (138), and Juan Diaz (145).

Among the top incoming freshmen are James AhHee, Korey Grende, and Shane Hoopai.

Grende placed fifth at the middle school state meet last year. The other two also qualified for the middle school state meet.

“Our goal is to be able to field every weight by the time league season begins Jan. 9,” Young said.
