Baker’s ‘Fantastic Four’ place at wrestling tourney

Four of the five Baker wrestlers competing at the Class 4A state tournament placed in their weight divisions Saturday.

“Our Fantastic Four, all the guys who returned from last year, placed,” said Baker coach Dee Gorrell.

“Everybody did well. They all went deep into the semifinals. I’m really proud of them. It was a nice way to end the year.”

Andrew Gettle was the highest Baker placer, taking fourth at 145 pounds. Gettle lost the third-fourth place match 6-3 to Ontario’s Frank Lopez.

Gettle lost his quarterfinal match Friday by second-round pin to second-seed Jacoby Stanley of Cottage Grove. He then marched through the consolation bracket, winning three matches to reach the third-fourth place match.

Gettle defeated Scappoose’s Jared Bradley 1-0, pinned Nathan Teal of Estacada in 44 seconds, then topped Jack Perry of Sweet Home 7-1.

Ted Shaw (189) finished fifth.

Shaw pinned Thomas Shantz of Sisters in the third round to reach the semifinals. There he lost 11-2 to Tyler Spinas of Molalla.

In consolation action Shaw lost 10-4 to Cole Banta of Astoria to drop into the match for fifth and sixth place. There he defeated Anthony Albright of Sweet Home 10-4.

Andrew Porter (130) finished seventh.

Porter lost his quarterfinal match 14-6 to second seed Taylor Tagle of Sweet Home. He then defeated Nick Ough of Siuslaw 11-5 before losing by second-round pin to third seed Chase Fields of Ontario.

In the match for seventh and eighth place Porter pinned Stayton’s Dylan Wellman in the third round.

Jake Shukle (215) placed eighth.

Shukle lost his quarterfinal match to top-seed Lance Tausaga of Illinois Valley 11-3. He then defeated Dylan Roberts of Molalla 12-6 before losing 3-0 to Marc Callagan of Sweet Home.

In the match for seventh and eighth, Shukle was pinned in the first round by Grant Thompson of Cottage Grove.

The only Bulldog not to place was Anthony Constantine (152). He finished the tournament 2-2. Friday he defeated Gladstone’s Devon Renard 3-2 in overtime before losing by first-round pin to Bryce Dryden of Philomath.

Baker finished 17th in the team standings.

“It was an awesome tournament,” Gorrell said. “It was heart-pounding. When you place at state that means that at each weight there are only a few guys better than them.”
