Blankenship receives honor

Baker High School senior Derek Blankenship has been selected to play in the 2010 Under Armor Pre-season All-American Baseball Tournament Jan. 16-17 at Tucson, Ariz.

Games will be played at the Kino Sports Complex, spring training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Blankenship earned the honor after trying out for the teams in November.

“The tryouts were at Willamette University the same weekend the Baker football team played at Stayton,” said Dan Blankenship, Derek’s father and high school coach.

The elder Blankenship said the tournament consists of two games Saturday and one Sunday. Players — the top 200 in the nation — will be divided into teams by region. There are four other Oregon players on the list, all from Class 5A and 6A teams.

The tournament format is a 20-team wood bat tournament. Pro scouts from most of the major league teams attend the event to scout the players.

Blankenship, a shortstop and pitcher, helped Baker to second place at the Class 4A state playoffs last spring.
