Briefs: Vaughan honored

MCMINNVILLE — Jackson Vaughan, a former Baker High School graduate, has been named the Northwest Conference Softball Coach of the Year for the sixth straight season.

Vaughan led Linfield to a 39-6 overall record, setting a new team record for best winning percentage. He guided the Wildcats to their sixth straight NWC crown, rolling to a 26-2 conference record. Linfield again competed in the West Regionals, reaching the championship game before falling in extra innings.


TAB youth tennis to start June 9

The annual summer Tennis Association of Baker (TAB) youth tennis program begins June 9 at the Ash Grove Complex.

Play will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Tuesday through Aug. 11.

Registration forms are available at the Baker Middle School and Baker High School offices or from Ginger Rembold.

Rembold said there will not be an elementary weekly program this year.

 The program will include drills, match play, and fun competition including singles ladder, mixed doubles, “Storm the Brigade” and mini-tournaments.

Registration will also welcome youths to TAB Social Nights on Sundays and Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.

Cost is $20 for the summer plus one unopened can of tennis balls. T-shirt included as sizes available.

Completed registration forms should be brought or mailed to Ginger Rembold, 1704 Broadway St., Baker City 97814, phone 523-4731. Entry position on the ladder is determined by order of registration. Please make checks payable to TAB.


Baker hoop camp scheduled

The annual Baker High School Summer 2009 Basketball Skills Camp is planned June 8-10 at BHS.

Cost of the camp for fourth through eighth grade athletes is $30 per camper.

The camp will run each day from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The first 50 campers signing up will receive a camp basketball. All campers will receive camp t-shirts.

Instruction will include individual skills instruction in shooting, passing, ball handling, defending and rebounding; team instruction in screening, offensive and defensive concepts, and team games.

High school athletes and coaches will help with all team and individual instruction. High school athletes are given an opportunity to raise money to help reduce their summer ball expenses by recruiting youth campers. Coach Craig Woods said if you have been contacted by a high school athlete and would like to sign their name on the registration  you may do so. If you leave “High School Athlete” name blank the money will be put into the fund and split among all athletes.

Pine-Eagle girls camp in June

HALFWAY — The 33rd annual Pine-Eagle Summer Girls’ Basketball Camp is planned June 15-19 at Pine-Eagle High School.

The camp is for girls in grades 6 through 12 next year. Girls are divided into three leagues based on skill level so that they can compete against girls of the same ability. Each girl will be able to play in 10 to 14 games during the week with the coaches instructed to play each girl at least half of each game. Teams average 7- 8 girls with each team having their own coach.   

The camp emphasizes fundamentals — shooting, passing, dribbling and both offensive and defensive skills. Morning sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., afternoon sessions from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., or later dependent upon camp enrollment. The gym is open every evening from 7 to 9 p.m. for girls who want help in specific areas. 

Registration deadline is May 29. After this date, there will be a $10 late charge per camper.

Cost is $80 if you provide your own lodging. Pine-Eagle  school district allows you to park campers in the parking lot, hook up, and use the showers and bathrooms. Cost is $120 for those who desire room and board. Lodging is provided by players and patrons of the Pine-Eagle School District. Every attempt is made to pair students of the same age. Lunches are the responsibility of each participant.

Tennis group kicks off season

The Tennis Association of Baker (TAB) is inviting all current tennis players, and anyone interested in taking up the game, to the summer kick off event on Sunday, June 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ash Grove Tennis Courts near the Baker High School sports complex.

Desserts, soda and water will be provided. Everyone attending will get a new can of tennis balls, and a raffle will be held for five tokens to play tennis under the lights.

Mountain High rodeo June 19

ENTERPRISE — Mountain High Broncs and Bulls is coming to Enterprise June 19-20.

Saddle bronc, ranch saddle bronc and bull riding competition will begin at 6 p.m. Friday. Mutton busting and the second rounds of the Friday events start at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets will be on sale at the gate. Tickets are $12 adults, kids 12 and under half price, and infants free.

Co-ed softball teams forming

Registration for the Baker County Family YMCA co-ed slowpitch softball league are being taken through June 5.

Participants must be at least 16 years old by June 24; minors need parent’s signature. Five men and five women are needed to field a team. Games will be played Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 5:55 p.m. and 7:10 p.m. for 5-7 weeks depending on the number of teams.

Fees are $225 by May 29, or $250 by May 30. Registration forms are available at the YMCA/Sam-O Swim Center, 580 Baker St., or the Y Fitness Center, 2021 Main St.


Tackle football registration starts

Registration for the Baker County Family YMCA fall youth tackle football program will be taken through Aug. 1, after which there will be a $5 late fee added.

The program is for youth entering Grades 4-6, or who are at least nine years of age by Sept. 1.

Registration forms are available at the YMCA/Sam-O Swim Center, 580 Baker St., or the Y Fitness Center, 2021 Main St. Forms may be mailed in or brought to either location. Volunteer coaches and referees also are needed. More information is available by calling Linda Knight at 523-4050.
