Baker had two wrestlers win consolation titles and placed 16th in the team standings Saturday at the annual Muilenburg wrestling tournament at La Grande High School.

The Bulldogs placed 16th with 58 points. Pine-Eagle was 21st with 22 points.

Peter Baker finished 5-1 at 170 pounds to win the consolation title.

Sean Stanford finished 5-2 to win the consolation crown at 138 pounds.

“Peter made a few mistakes but persevered through a few of the matches to battle back and win,” said Baker coach Brandon Young.

“He has really improved since last season, and is very close to wrestling at another level. With his dedication and work ethic it will happen.”

“Sean Stanford had a bit of bad luck as he had to wrestle two ‘pig tail’ matches to enter the tournament,” Young said.

“The first one against Javier Gonzalez of Vale who finished second in the tournament. Sean won his second ‘pig tail,’ but since he lost the first one he had to wrestle all the way back through the consolation bracket.”

Ten of the 14 Bulldogs who wrestled earned at least one win.

Shane Hoopai (285) advanced to the consolation semifinals.

Marco Vela (132) advanced to the consolation quarterfinals.

For Pine-Eagle, Isaiah Simpson (120) advanced to the consolation semifinals.

Moroni Jensen (126) and Jeff Rice (145) advanced to the consolation quarterfinals.
