Bulldogs come up short in 4A title game with Marist

Top-ranked Spartans hand Baker 55-16 loss

CORVALLIS — Baker’s dream of a Class 4A state football championship became a nightmare Saturday morning at Reser Stadium.

Top-ranked Marist gave the Bulldogs all the bad dreams they could handle, stopping Baker 55-16 for the championship.

“We didn’t take care of the ball very well, and they’re a good team. That’s a bad combination,” said Baker coach Dave Johnson.

“And defensively we didn’t wrap up well at times. They ran hard and that made it tough to wrap up at times.

“You can’t give them a short field and expect to stay close. But it was a privilege to get to play them.”

Marist ran up a 48-0 halftime lead, meaning the second half was played under a running clock due to the mercy rule.

“We told the kids let’s just keep playing football,” Johnson said of his halftime comments to the Bulldogs.

The Baker coach said the Bulldogs also went to their “no huddle” offense to run as many plays as possible.

Despite the results, Johnson said, the Bulldogs have no reason to hang their heads.

“We’re really proud of the kids,” he said. “Finishing 11-2, and running the season the way we did. We’re proud of our second-place trophy and happy for the boys.

“These kids will be able to look back on it and realize they’ve done something special,” Johnson said.

The second-place finish is the highest finish of any Baker football team in school history. The 11 wins equals the most wins in a season by a Baker team. The 1993 semifinal team coached by Mike Sullivan finished 11-1.

“We wanted this experience to be a memory for the kids,” Johnson said. “The outcome obviously wasn’t what we hoped for, but the kids got to see and do some things they might otherwise not have gotten to do.

“We have a great sense of pride with what they accomplished.”

Marist (14-0) built a 27-0 first-quarter lead. Quarterback Tevin Cheever threw two touchdown passes, and running back Logan Silver scored two of his four rushing touchdowns.

Two more Silver touchdowns and another Cheever TD pass gave the Spartans a 48-0 halftime lead.

Cheever’s fourth TD pass built the lead to 55-0 after three periods.

Baker scored both its touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Stephen Talbot scored the first on a 21-yard pass from Jesse Brown. Talbot then added a second touchdown on an 11-yard run.
