Bulldogs drop two GOL games to Tigers in Ontario

Baker has lost three games in a row

ONTARIO — It’s been a couple of years since a Baker baseball team has lost three games in a row — until last Friday.

Baker, ranked second in the Class 4A rankings, had lost the second game of a Greater Oregon League doubleheader to La Grande a week ago. Friday, Ontario extended Baker’s losing streak to three games with a 2-1, 7-5 sweep of the Bulldogs at Ontario.

Ontario (3-3 in the GOL) is a perfect 10-0 at home this season.

Baker’s usually potent offense was silenced, for the most part, by Ontario pitching Friday. The Bulldogs left seven men on base in the final four innings of the first game, and 11 men on base in Game 2.

“We just have to get our bats wound up again,” said Baker coach Dan Blankenship.

“It will be a nice challenge to see if we can get things turned around, and get back to playing our brand of baseball.”

In the first game, Ontario’s Riley Horn threw a two-hitter, striking out 14 Bulldogs.

“The Horn kid threw well,” Blankenship said. “We just didn’t swing well.”

Ontario scored an unearned run in the first inning on a Baker error. The Tigers’ Cristian Sanchez added a solo home run in the second to give Ontario a 2-0 lead.

Baker’s run came in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch.

Will Barr took the loss despite striking out seven Tigers, and walking three.

“Will Barr pitched a great game for us,” Blankenship said. “We just didn’t give him any support.”

Baker left two runners on base in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.

“We got guys on, but could just never get the hit when we needed one,” the Baker coach said.

In Game 2, Baker took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run double by Derek Blankenship and an RBI hit by Trace Richardson.

Justin Durflinger’s RBI double gave Baker a 4-2 edge in the second inning.

Ontario then went up 5-4 after three innings thanks to home runs by Tony Trejo and Josh Mejia.

Baker will try to get back on track Tuesday with a single non-league game at Burns. The Bulldogs (3-3 in the GOL) then host Mac-Hi in a doubleheader Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Baker Sports Complex.
