HILLSBORO — Baker made school history Saturday when the Bulldogs defeated Phoenix 57-14 in the Class 4A state football semifinals.
The win propels the Bulldogs into the 4A championship game for the first time in school history. Baker will play top-ranked Marst at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reser Stadium in Corvallis. Baker dominated Phoenix in the semis. The Bulldogs rolled up 447 yards on just 32 plays. Phoenix finished with 241 yards on 54 plays. Baker scored on its first offensive play when Stephen Talbot raced 81 yards for a touchdown with 9:45 left in the first quarter. Quarterback Jesse Brown added a rushing touchdown and connected on an 84-yard TD pass to Trace Richardson to build Baker's lead to 22-0 after one quarter. Brown added a second TD run, and Dekker Smith another touchdwn on the ground as the Bulldogs led 36-0 at halftime. Baker scored on every offensive drive in the first half until the final play of the half. The Bulldogs amassed 388 yards in the half. Baker then scored two touchdowns in the first 32 seconds of the third period, and three touchdowns on its first four touches of the second half. Talbot ran the second-half kickoff back 82 yards for the first score. Then after recovering a Phoenix fumble, Talbot added a 3-yard TD run. Brown completed Baker's scoring midway through the third quarter when he hit Will Barr on an 8-yard score. Brown finished 7-of-9 passing for 155 yards. Talbot added 159 yards rushing on just 8 carries. Richardson caught three balls for 102 yards. |
