Bulldogs slug four homers in romp past Prospectors

Baker uses the long balls to run its record to 6-0

Baker uncorked the long ball Tuesday afternoon to roll over Grant Union 14-1 in a five-inning non-league baseball game at the Baker Sports Complex.

The Bulldogs hammered a dozen hits, including four home runs. All four homers came in a nine-run fourth inning.

“Nine runs on nine hits. That was a pretty good inning,” said Baker coach Dan Blankenship.

“Once we got going, we really hit some balls hard. One through nine we were putting the ball in play,” Blankenship said.

In the fourth inning, Coleman Lay led off with a double. He scored the first run on a Will Barr single. Barr was thrown out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double.

Justin Durflinger then lined a solo homer to left field. Then, after Ty Everson walked, Stephen Talbot slapped a two-run homer to right-center field.

Grant Union then changed pitchers. Derek Blankenship welcomed the new hurler by lining the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for Baker’s third homer in the inning.

Dekker Smith then walked, and Trace Richardson singled. Smith scored on a double by Matt Gorrell. Lay then hammered a three-run homer to left to complete the scoring.

Baker also tallied five times in the second inning.

Lay had an RBI single, Durflinger a bases loaded walk and Everson a sacrifice fly to plate three runs. Two more runs scored on a Grant Union error.

Lay and Barr combined to throw a two-hitter with Lay getting the win.

Offensively, Lay and Richardson each finished with three hits. Lay had four RBIs. Durflinger had two hits and two RBis, and Talbot two RBIs.

Baker (6-0) hosts Weiser, Idaho, in a single game Saturday at 1 p.m.
