Bulldogs split with Hermiston

By GERRY STEELE

Of the Baker City Herald

Baker split a non-league tennis match against Hermiston Friday at the Ash Grove courts.

Baker won the girls match 5-3, but dropped the boys match 6-2.

That was exciting for the girls to beat a good team like Hermiston, said Baker coach Thom Van Artsdalen.

Hermiston had defeated the Bulldogs earlier in the season.

On Friday the Baker girls won two of four singles, and won three of the four doubles matches.

Jennifer Trader and Katie Rafferty earned player of the match honors for their 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-2 doubles victory.

They were playing some girls who were very aggressive, Van Artsdalen said. Jennifer and Katie had to be tenacious, and play just as aggressively.

Lanae Sorenson and Katie Bogart teamed to win their doubles match in three sets. Kelly Bogart and Christa Van Artsdalen lost just two games in winning their doubles match.

Amy Hooper and Gloria Ho each won their singles matches in two sets.

In the boys match, Greg Guyer was the only Baker singles player to win his match. He claimed player of the match honors after winning 6-4, 6-1.

Greg was down 4-1 in the first set and came back to win 11 of the next 12 games for the win, Van Artsdalen said. We had a little sideline conference, and he just turned it around. He took control.

Austin McKnight and Brady Romtvedt won their doubles match, 6-0, 6-2.

Baker hosts Pendleton in another non-league match this afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Ash Grove Tennis Complex.
