Bulldogs stop Lethbridge
Bulldogs stop Lethbridge
|
Baker’s Homecoming football game Friday at Bulldog Memorial Stadium had the look of David versus Goliath. David in this case was the Bulldogs with their speed and quickness. Goliath was played by Lethbridge Collegiate Institute, a visiting team from Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. And, just as in the story where David defeats Goliath, Baker ran away from the Rams 42-12 to improve its season record to 6-0. The Bulldogs scored on four of their five first-half possessions, and closed the half with a defensive touchdown to lead 35-0 at intermission. Baker’s first touchdown was set up when Stephen Talbot returned an LCI punt 32 yards to the Rams 43. Talbot and quarterback Jesse Brown then comnibed to gain 33 yards on two carries moving the ball to the LCI 10. Three plays lost five yards before Brown found Justin Durflinger open in the front left corner of the end zone for a 16-yard TD pass. Dekker Smith’s conversion kick gave Baker a 7-0 lead with 7:13 left in the first quarter. Baker’s second possession started on its own 15. Brown completed passes to Luke Austin and Ty Everson, and Talbot added a 15-yuard run to give the Bulldogs a first down on the LCI 43. Brown then dodged the LCI rush and found Talbot alone in the left flat. Talbot then turned on the afterburners and scooted 43 yards for the touchdown. The PAT failed leaving Bker up 13-0 with 3:52 left in the period. Baker tallied its third touchdown with 6:25 left in the first half when Talbot, back to punt, faked the kick and raced 54 yards for the score. Brown connected with Durflinger on the two-point conversion pass to build Baker’s cushion to 21-0. Then, after forcing a Ram punt, Brown connected on passes to Austin, Evrson and Brandon Dolby to help move the ball to the LCI 9. Austin then scampered around right end for the 9-yard touchdown. Smith’s kikc made the score 28-0 Baker with 1:26 left in the half. The Bulldogs’ defense completed the first-half scoring when Colton Flynn intercepted an LCI pass and raced 25 yards for the score as the horn sounded. Baker led 35-0 at halftime. Baker completed its scoring on the opening drive of the second half. Trace Richardson appeared to do the honors on a 40-yard pass play from Brown. But Richardson was ruled down at the LCI 1. Brown scored on the next play, bulling up the middle on a quarterback sneak. LCI then used its size — 210, 220 and 240 pounds in the backfield — to power to two second-half touchdowns. Baker finished with 378 yards total offense. Talbot carried the ball 15 times for 128 yards. Brown completed 18-of-30 passes for 253 yards. Richardson caught seven of those passes for 104 yards. LCI finished with 193 yards, 137 coming on the ground. Baker (6-0) is ide this week before opening Greater Oregon League play Oct. 23 at Mac-Hi.
