Bulls have mixed results

UNITY — Burnt River basketball teams had a busy week in the High Desert League, with three games for both the girls and boys.

The five remaining players of the girls dropped a 58-22 contest to Crane Tuesday.

Burnt River rebounded Friday night by beating Jordan Valley 61-35. With no extra players on the bench, the remainder of the season hinges on the Bulls remaining healthy and being able to stay out of foul trouble on the court. Ellie Delong led the Lady Bulls with 22 points.

The Burnt River boys had a good, although not quite as successful showing against Crane, losing 488-37.

Friday against top-ranked Jordan Valley, the Bulls had trouble keeping up. During the third quarter Caleb Andrews and Ban Du started hitting three-point shots to pull the Bulls within striking distance, but the Mustangs came out strong and got the hot hands in the fourth to put the Bulls away 77-54. Ban Du and Justus Wise each had 16 points for the Bulls, followed by Andrews with 11.

Saturday’s match up was with Harper Hornets at Unity. Both the girls and boys teams looked flat after the previous night of travel and struggled to get any offense going, but were both able to get a win.

The Lady Bulls led the Hornets the entire game before winning 35-21. Celina Kezerle and Delong led the scoring.

The boy’s game was closer. The Bulls gained the lead early and were able to stay ahead in spite of cold hands and turnovers. Burnt River led by 11 at half-time, but lost momentum in the second half. Harper hit a 3-pointer at the final buzzer, but Burnt River held on for a 50-47 win.
