Burnt River girls place fourth

JOHN DAY — Burnt River’s hopes of advancing to the Class 1A state volleyball tournament came up just short Saturday at the High Desert district tournament at Grant Union High School.

Burnt River finished fourth at the district tournament. The top three teams advanced to state.

Burnt River defeated Harper 25-18, 25-17, 25-17 in the opening round. Th eLdy Bulls then lost 25-15, 20-25, 25-13, 25-11 to Adrian in the semifinals.

Jordan Valley then edged Burnt River 27-25, 25-27, 25-21, 25-19 in the third-place match.

“We had a great season, and I’m very proud of the girls,” said Burnt River coach Tonya Seebart. “It was just a long day for the girls.”

Burnt River earned the tournament sportsmanship award. Ellie DeLong was named to the all-tournament first team, and Chelsea Bradford second team.

Five Lady Bulls lso were named to the High Desert League all-league teams.

DeLong was named to the first team, Whitni Andrson and Celina Kezerle to the second team, and Bradford and Alise Kootntz received honorable mention.
