Burnt River girls win two

UNITY — Burnt River’s girls basketball team swept a pair of High Desert League basketball games last weekend, and the Bulls boys split.

Burnt River girls sweep

The Lady Bull “Fab-Five” chalked up two more wins over the weekend. Friday against Dayville/Monument at home, the girls had a bit of a slow start. The Tigers kept it close for the first half, but the Lady Bulls pulled ahead in the second half to win 42-28.

All five Burnt River girls got in on the scoring, led by Celina Kezerle with 14 points.

On Saturday the Lady Bulls traveled to Prairie City where the girls jumped out front early and stayed there the entire game.

The Panther girls got into foul trouble early in the first half and put the Lady Bulls at the free throw line often. Fourteen of the 35 points were scored by free throws before halftime. When Chelsea Bradford fouled out at the beginning of the fourth quarter the Lady Bulls played the rest of the game with four players. They were still able to maintain their sizeable lead and won 53-37.

Kezerle and Ellie Delong both had 15 points against the Panthers, closely followed by Whitni Anderson with 14. With just two more games left in the season, the girls are looking good for the district playoffs.

Burnt River boys

The Burnt River boys had a disappointing loss on Friday to Dayville/Monument, losing 56-33, but they more than made up for that loss when they pulled out a stunning upset against the Panthers in Prairie City on Saturday afternoon, keeping their hopes alive for post-season play.

The Bulls were down 37-19 at halftime but the Burnt River boys came out of the locker room ready to play the second half and perhaps the Panthers thought they already had the game won. Ju Hyoung Park’s succession of 3-pointers sparked the Bulls. He, Ban Du and Justus Wise combined to score 20 in the third quarter.

Excellent defense by the Bulls held the Panthers to only six points in the fourth quarter and all the Burnt River boys tallied up another 19 points to pull out a 58-56 win.
