CRANE vs. DAMASCUS CHRISTIAN: Crane cruises to victory

By GERRY STEELE

Of the Baker City Herald

Crane made Damascus Christians first-ever game in the OSAA-U.S. Bank Class 1A state girls basketball tournament a disappointment Thursday in the first round of championship action.

Crane jumped out to a 12-4 first-quarter lead, then held off several Eagles challenges to earn a 55-39 victory at Baker High School.

Crane meets (Elkton or South Wasco County) in the chmapionship semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday. Damascus Christian played (Elkton or South Wasco County) in the consolation semifinals Friday morning.

Against Damascus Christian, Kathryn Nichols, Jennifer White and Megan Davies each scored four points in the first quarter to give Crane its lead.

Then, after Damascus Christian cut the deficit to 15-13 midway through the second quarter, Crane scored 12 of the final 15 points in the half for a 27-16 halftime advantage.

Nichols had five points, and Davies and Jaime Cargill four each in the second period.

Neither team could find the nets for most of the third period. Damascus Christian made a brief run late in the period to cut Cranes lead to 31-26 entering the final period.
