Cascade girls top Bulldogs

Third-ranked Cascade ended Baker’s season with a 47-37 defeat in the second round of the Class 4A state girls basketball playoffs Friday at Turner.

It was the third time in six years — the other times were 2005 and 2006 — the Bulldogs have met Cascade to earn the right to advance to the Class 4A tournament at Corvallis.

Baker led just once Friday, 1-0, but didn’t back down from the Cougars.

“There probably wasn’t anybody that gave us a chance in this game,” said Baker coach Tim Smith. “But the girls played their hearts out. They played tough.”

Cascade’s Tava Lewis outscored the Bulldogs by herself inn the first period that ended with the Cougars leading 8-6. Lewis had all eight of Cascade’s points. Whitney Phillips had five of Baker’s points.

Then, trailing 14-6, Baker made a brief run. Two points each by Mackenzie Warner, Tiffany Burk and Phillips pulled Baker to within 14-12. Cascade then went on to take a 21-15 halftime lead.

A three-pointer by Phillips, two baskets by Warner, and another by Haley Adams pulled Baker to within 28-24 midway through the third period. But that was as close as the Bulldogs would get. Cascade answered with an 11-0 run to end the quarter.

“We just didn’t shoot the ball well enough,” Smith said. “We hung close, and needed some shots to go, but they just didn’t.”

Phillips led Baker with 14 points. Warner added 10.

“We had a great game from Whitney Phillips,” Smith said. “In fact we had a nice effort from all of our seniors.

“The girls represented Baker very well. And we had a nice crowd. Several of the boys’ parents were there, and all of the girls’ parents were there. We’re all proud of the girls.”
