Columbia Christian tops Powder boys

There will be a new Class 1A boys basketball champion Saturday at Baker High School.

Last year’s champion, Powder Valley, was defeated 76-51 by Columbia Christian in the quarterfinals Thursday evening.

Thursday’s other quarterfinal winners were Wallowa 64-56 over Umpqua Valley Christian, Damascus Christian 69-63 over Nixyaawii, and Mohawk 86-62 over Ione.

Nixyaawii played UVC and Powder Valley met Ione this morning in consolation semifinal action.

Columbia Christian 76, Powder Valley 51

Columbia Christian avenged a quarterfinal loss to the Badgers from a year ago.

A 16-0 Knights run from the 1:02 mark of the first quarter to the 4:14 mark of the second quarter broke the game open.

Powder Valley actually scored the first two points of the game before action started when it was discovered that the wrong player had been entered in the official scorebook as one of the five starters for Columbia Christian. No. 24 Brock Mueller had been listed as the starter, but it was actually No. 20 Braden Mueller.

Braden Mueller then made Powder pay. Mueller scored 14 points in the first half to help the Knights post a 35-18 halftime lead.

The Knights jumped out to a 7-2 lead before Powder Valley rallied. Six points from Trenton Dixon and a three-point basket by Peter Colton helped Powder Valley  take an 11-10 lead with 1:19 left in the first quarter.

That’s when Columbia Christian went on its streak. A three-point play by Michael Hickman and a basket by Mueller gave the Knights a 15-11 lead at the break.

Johnny Stefan scored five points, Hickman four and Levi McDonald two as the Knights increased their lead to 26-11 midway through the second period.

Mueller led Columbia Christian with 25 points. McDonald and Hickman each added 15 points. Hickman had a dozen rebounds, and Stefan 10.

Dixon led Powder Valley with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Colton added 11 points and eight boards.
