Cove boys third

Cove and Imbler had split their two regular-season meetings and knew each other very well.

So it was no surprise that their game for third place at the District 7-1A boysbasketball tournament went into overtime Saturday.

Cove dominated the extra period and came away with a 53-46 win in the Baker High School gym and advanced to the Class 1A state playoffs starting Tuesday.

Cove led most of the way in regulation until Imbler scored the final seven points of the fourth quarter to knot the game at 41-41.

Cove then outscored the Panthers 12-5 in overtime to advance.

he teams battled tooth and nail in the first quarter with Cove pulling ahead 9-8 at the break.

The Leopards then outscored Imbler 18-8 in the second period to take a 27-16 halftime edge.

Cove then built its cushion to 41-34 with 1:57 left in  regulation.

That’s when Imbler answered.

Wesley McDaniel scored four points and Jake McLean three to tie the game at 41-41 with 40.8 seconds left.

Cove’s Scott DelCurto missed a short jumper with 10 seconds left. Imbler rebounded but couldn’t get another shot off.

In overtime, Imbler took a 43-41 lead on a basket by Zack Phillips.

Cove then scored seven unanswered points, including five by DelCurto, to take a 48-43 lead with two minutes left.

Imbler could get no closer than four points after that.

Austin Woodward led Cove with 14 points. DelCurto added 11, Phil Allen 10 and Brandon Batty 10.

McLean led Imbler with 16 points. Phillips added 10 and McDaniel 10.
