Damascus Christian girls, City Christian boys win Class 1A state titles

Ana Wakefield calmly sank two free throws with 23 seconds left in the game Saturday to lift top-ranked Damascus Christian to a 46-44 victory over Condon/Wheeler in the Class 1A state girls basketball title game at Baker High School.

In a game that saw six ties and four lead changes, Damascus Christian freshman Hannah Forrar hit a basket with 1:36 left in regulation to knot the score at 44-44.

Then, after Condon/Wheeler’s Courtney MacInnxes missed a three-point try, the teams traded turnovers until Wakefield was fouled.

Following Wakefield’s free throws, Condon/Wheeler had one last attempt to send the game into overtime, but a shot by MacInnes was off the mark.

Damascus Christian (29-1) led 9-4 after one quarter, and increased its lead to 13-4 early in the second period.

Condon/Wheeler (28-2) then battled back to pull within 22-19 at halftime.

The teams then traded the lead thrugh much of the third quarter before Damascus Christian took a 9-point lead, 35-26, entering the fourth quarter.

Condon/Wheeler then went on an 11-2 run to take a 39-37 lead with 4:19 left in the game.

The teams then played through three more ties, the last on Forrar’s basket with 1:36 left.

Forrar led Damascus Christian with 19 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Wakefield added 15 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Ellie Logan topped Condon/Wheeler with 18 points, 10 rebounds and three assists.

MacInnes added 15 points and six rebounds.

The title was the first for Coach Dave Wakefield in 21 years of coaching at Damascus Christian and North Clackamas Christian.

City Christian nipped top-ranked Horizon Christian 41-39 Saturday to win the Class 1A state boys basketball championship at Baker High School.

Ryan Glanville’s three-pointer with 23 seconds left in the third quarter gave City Christian, from Portland, the lead for good.

The Lions (29-2) then held off the defending 1A champions the rest of the way. Horizon Christian (30-1), of Hood River, which saw a 38-game winning streak snapped, closed to within one point three times in the fourth quarter.

The last time came with 1:18 left in the game, on a three-point basket by Micah Engel.

Horizon Christian had two attempts to regain the lead in the final minute but shots by Ryan Aldrich and Matt Totaro, the latter with four seconds left, failed.

The game was close throughout with six ties and seven lead changes.

City Christian’s largest lead was seven points, Horizon Christian’s three points.

Mikey Chown led City Christian with 14 points. Jordan Boivin added 10.

Totaro led Horizon Christian with 13 points and nine rebounds.
