Day 1 District 7-1A girls tourney

Powder Valley and Wallowa advanced to the semifinal round of the District 7-1A girls basketball tournament with wins Thursday at Baker High School.
Powder Valley defeated Joseph 50-27 and Wallowa topped Cove 54-19.

Powder Valley will play Pine-Eagle at 12:30 p.m. today, and Wallowa will meet Imbler at 6:30 p.m.


Powder Valley 50, Joseph 27

Powder Valley pounded the ball inside early, building a 6-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game.

“Our game plan was to move the ball and take what they gave us,” said Powder coach Brent Gyllenberg.

“They gave us the inside. Jessica (Pedro) stepped up and did a great job cleaning up under there.

“The girls are all playing well,” Gyllenberg said. “I’m pleased with the way they’re moving the ball.”

Pedro was the main beneficiary of the early spurt, scoring four of her 18 points in that stretch.

Kelsie White added four points as the Badgers built their lead to 11-6 at the break.

Pedro and Katie Hamann each tallied four points in the second period as Powder increased its lead to 25-13 at halftime.

Pedro added eight points in the third quarter as the Badgers led 38-21 entering the final eight minutes.

Ali Abrego added 10 rebounds for Powder, as the Badgers outboarded the Eagles 50-33.

Jade Delury led Joseph scoring with eight points.

Skylar Waters led the Cougars with 16 points. Bekah Jamerson added 10 rebounds.

Jamie Murchison led Cove with eight points and eight rebounds.
