Diamondbacks sweep Boise tourney

Team Rudi finished the Boise Firecracker Invitational American Legion baseball tournament with a perfect 6-0 record and the championship trophy Sunday at Boise.

Team Rudi coach Dan Blankenship said it was the third straight year the Diamondbacks have gone undefeated and won the tournament title.

“We hit the ball pretty well. All our pitchers threw well for us. And we had some really good defensive plays throughout the weekend,” Blankenship said.

Team Rudi defeated Twin Falls 7-6 in the title game.

The Diamondbacks opened tournament action Thursday with a 10-0 win over the same Twin Falls team. They followed that with a 6-2 win over Centennial, 13-0 over the Boise Capitals, 16-0 over the Columbia Mudcats, and 14-3 over the Boise Seminoles.


Team Rudi 10, Twin Falls 0

Matt Gorrell threw a three-hitter, striking out five.

Ty Everson led Team Rudi’s offense with four hits. Gorrell, Coleman Lay and Sam Averett each had two hits. Trevor Freese added a triple, and Will Barr and Colten Richards each a hit.

Team Rudi 6, Centennial 2

Justin Durflinger struck out five while throwing another three-hitter.

The Diamondbacks helped Durflinger out with a pair of double plays, the second to end the game.

Everson had two hits. Richards, Lay and Averett each had one hit.


Team Rudi 13, Boise Capitals 0

Lay fired a one-hitter, striking out eight.

Jesse Brown had a home run. Barr, Freese and Everson each had a double. Lay had three hits and Barr and Richards two.


Team Rudi 16, Columbia Mudcats 0

Averett and Dillon Blankenship combined on a three-hitter, striking out five.

Everson had four hits. Freese, Blankenship, Richards, Barr, Brown and Averett each had two hits. Lay and Darren Dolby each had one hit.

Blankenship had two doubles, Richards a triple, and Barr a triple.


Team Rudi 14, Boise Seminoles 3

Everson earned the win, allowing seven hits. He struck out eight.

Richards slugged a grand slam homer in the first inning.

Richards finished with a double and the homer. Brown and Averett each added two hits. Freese, Lay and Dolby each had a hit. Everson had a double.


Team Rudi 7, Twin Falls 6

Barr pitched six innings to earn the win. Lay struck out two batters in the seventh to gain the save.

Freese, Blankenship, Everson, Richards and Barr had consecutive hits in the first inning to give Team Rudi a 4-0 lead.

Then, trailing 6-4 in the sixth, Everson was hit by a pitch and Blankenship, Richards, Barr and Brown had hits to give the Diamondbacks a 7-6 lead.

Freese, Blankenship, Richards, Barr and Brown each finished with two hits. Everson added one.

Team Rudi (20-4) will host its annual wood bat tournament Friday through Sunday at the Baker Sports Complex.
