Diamondbacks sweep Burns

Team Rudi combines strong hitting and pitching

Baker Team Rudi combined hot bats and solid pitching Monday to sweep Burns 15-5 and 9-1 in an American Legion baseball doubleheader at the Baker Sports Complex.

The Diamondbacks slugged 29 hits in the two games, and allowed just eight.

“Our pitchers threw fairly well,” said Baker coach Dan Blankenship. “I think every one of them had at least one good inning.

Dekker Smith, Will Barr and Justin Durflinger combined on a five-hitter in the opener. Matt Gorrell, Ty Everson, Coleman Lay and Derek Blankenship threw a three-hitter in the nightcap.

Coach Blankenship also was pleased, for the most part, with the Diamondbacks’ hitting.

“That’s what summer ball is for, to get some quality at-bats,” he said. “We played pretty well most of the time. We had some good innings, and then kind of played laid back at times.”

After spotting Burns a 1-0 first-inning lead in the opener, Gorrell’s two-run double down the left field line gave Team Rudi the lead for good.

The Diamondbacks then erupted for eight runs in the second inning.

Smith led the way with a two-run home run. Everson added a two-run double and a run-scoring single. Blankenship chipped in an RBI double, and Trace Richardson an RBI single.

Lay slugged a three-run homer to left, and Everson added another RBI single in a 4-run third inning.

Jesse Brown’s bloop RBI single with one out in the fifth ended the game by 10-run mercy rule.

With Gorrell on the mound to start Game 2, Blankenship called up catcher Colten Richards from the Junior Legion team to start behind the plate. Richards promptly singled to left in the first to drive home Team Rudi’s first run.

Six singles and a sacrifice fly plated five more runs in the third. Gorrell had the sacrifice fly. Richardson, Lay, Taylor McEnroe and Stephen Talbot each had RBI singles.

Lay added an RBI ground out in the sixth.

Team Rudi (3-1) travels to Hermiston tonight for another doubleheader. The Diamondbacks then play at the Walla Walla tournament Friday through Sunday.
