Diamondbacks sweep Devin Oil

Walla Walla tournament is up next

HERMISTON — The Team Rudi Diamondbacks swept Hermiston’s Devin Oil 9-4 and 12-11 Wednesday in an American Legion baseball doubleheader.

Team Rudi built an 8-1 lead after three innings of the opener and rolled to the easy win. Justin Durflinger earned the win with relief help from Will Barr, Coleman Lay and Dekker Smith.

Trace Richardson’s two-run single, and RBI hits by Smith and Lay plated the four first-inning runs.

Derek Blankenship added an RBI single in the second. Durflinger added a sacrifice fly, and Stephen Talbot a run-scoring single in the third.

Talbot completed the scoring with an RBI triple in the fourth.

Smith’s three hits — a double short of the cycle — helped the Diamondbacks win Game 2.

Smith’s two-run home run and his run-scoring fielder’s choice helped Team Rudi build a 4-0 lead in the top of the third. Blankenship added an RBI double.

Then, after Devin Oil tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning, Smith’s two-run triple, a two-run double by Lay and Ty Everson’s RBI double helped Team Rudi build a 10-5 lead after five innings.

Team Rudi led 12-5 entering the bottom of the seventh, then had to hold on. Devin Oil scored six runs in the inning, before Blankenship got Justin Jones to ground out for the final out with the bases loaded.

Talbot earned the win in relief of Matt Gorrell.

Team Rudi is competing at the Walla Walla tournament today through Sunday.
