Diamondbacks top Burns

Team Rudi combined solid pitching, hitting and defense Tuesday to hand Burns a 10-1 nine-inning loss in an American Legion baseball game at Burns.

The teams were originally scheduled to play two seven-inning games, but due to a lack of players the teams decided to play just a single nine-inning contest.

Baker played with several players from its Junior Legion team due to regulars gone on a basketball trip.

“Defensively we were very sound,” said Team Rudi coach Dan Blankenship. “The kids played very well.

“Most of our pitchers threw very well; had good control. Anthony Shankle threw very well. We didn’t walk a whole bunch. That was a key. And we had 12 strikeouts.”

Team Rudi forged a 2-0 lead in the second on RBI singles by Dillon Blankenship and Ty Everson.

The Diamondbacks increased their lead to 6-0 in the third. Justin Durflinger, Dustin Hull and Everson each had a run-scoring single, and Blankenship a sacrifice fly.

Everson and Stephen Talbot added run-scoring singles in the fifth. Hull had an RBI double, and Everson his fourth RBI single in the ninth.

Matt Gorrell, the first of four Team Rudi pitchers, got the win.

Team Rudi (9-3) travels to Boise for a four-day tournament Thursday. The Diamondbacks open play against the Eagle Vipers at 9 a.m. MDT Thursday at Borah High School.
