Team Rudi edges Winnemucca 5-3 in title contest Team Rudi completed its American Legion baseball season on a high note Sunday, winning the Team Rudi Wood Bat Tournament at the Baker Sports Complex. The Diamondbacks (25-4 overall) swept five opponents in three days to run their current winning streak to 13 games. Team Rudi edged Winnemucca, Nev., 5-3 in Sunday’s title game. Team Rudi opened tournament play Friday afternoon by stopping Redmond 13-0. Friday evening the Diamondbacks topped Orofino 9-1. Saturday, as former Oakland A’s stars Joe Rudi and Carney Lansford looked on, Team Rudi stopped Pendleton 6-1. Rudi threw out the first pitch before the game. Sunday morning Team Rudi nipped Milton-Freewater 4-3. Team Rudi 5, Winnemucca 3 The Diamondbacks had a seesaw affair with Winnemucca before pulling away. Trailing 1-0 after one inning, Team Rudi tied the game in the second. Coleman Lay was hit by a pitch with one out, and Jesse Brown followed with a single. Then with two outs, brown attempted a walkoff steal toward second. When Winnemucca made the play, Lay stole home. Winnemucca answered with two runs in the third to regain a 3-1 lead. Team Rudi got one run back in the bottom of the third. Trevor Freese, who finished the game 4-for-4, rapped a one-out single. Dillon Blankenship followed with another single. Winning pitcher Ty Everson then blooped a single down the right field line to score Freese. Team Rudi took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth. Lay opened the inning with a double and eventually scored on a passed ball. Brown added a single and two outs later scored on another Freese single. The Diamondbacks added an insurance run in the sixth when Brown walked and eventually scored on Freese’s fourth hit. Everson threw an eight-hitter, striking out 13 and walking one.

The Diamondbacks broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Freese led off with a double and went to third on a single by Blankenship. Freese scored on a Milton-Freewater error. Blankenship and Everson then scored on a single by Matt Gorrell. Sam Averett pitched the first five innings, striking out three, to gain the win. Blankenship earned the save despite allowing two runs in the seventh inning.

Team Rudi broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the second, then added four in the third. In the second inning, Lay walked and stole second. He advanced to third on a single by Brown, and then stole home. In the third, Everson drew a one-out walk and stole second. He scored on a double by Colten Richards. Richards scored on another double by Will Barr. Then, after Lay walked, Brown added a third double to score Barr. Lay threw the complete-game win, striking out seven and walking one while allowing four hits.

Team Rudi never trailed against Orofino. The Diamondbacks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Freese singled and came home on a single by Everson. Everson advanced to third on a Richards single and later stole home. The Diamondbacks added four runs in the third. One score when Lay was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Another scored on an error. The final two scored on a single by Darren Dolby. Dolby added an RBI single in a 3-run fifth. Barr earned the win on the mound, throwing a two-hitter. He struck out 12 and walked one.

Team Rudi used two big innings to end the game early. The Diamondbacks scored seven runs in the first. Brown had an RBI triple. Blankenship and Barr added run-scoring singles. Team Rudi added six runs in the second. Freese led the way with a three-run home run. Barr, Brown and Dolby added RBI singles. Everson threw the first two innings to gain the win. Brown threw the final three innings.
