Freshman runner sets new school record

By GERRY STEELE

Of the Baker City Herald

Freshman Danielle Jordan set a new Baker High School record in her first varsity track and field meet, and the Bulldogs earned several other high marks Friday at the annual Hermiston Time Trials.

Jordan won the girls 3,000 in a school record time of 11:02.72, breaking the old mark of 11:14.76 set at last years Class 3A state meet by teammate Whittney Harris.

Danielle ran a great race, said Baker assistant coach Suzy Cole, who also coached Jordan on the BHS cross country team last fall.

On the boys side, Nick Strommer earned a lifetime best while placing second in the pole vault. Strommer vaulted 11 feet, 6 inches.

We had an incredible meet. The kids ran excellent, Cole said. The young kids came out and did a heck of a job.

Cole said she was surprised by the overall effectiveness of the young Bulldogs in their first meet.

In the 14 years Ive coached it was the best first meet Ive seen from top to bottom, she said.

The weather was good, with very little wind, and temperatures between 50 and 60. And the kids had great attitudes. These kids are not afraid to work hard.

Some of the other top Baker girls marks were by Tessa Vergari, second in the 800 (2:33.15); Harris, third in the 1,500 (5:32.58); Michelle Evans, third in the 400 (1:06.43); and Tiffany Taylor, third in the discus (87 feet, 8 inches) and fifth in the shot (31 feet, 9 inches).

Other top boys marks were by Casey Bond, second in the 400 (53.52), third in the long jump (19 feet, 8 inches), and third in the triple jump (39 feet, 9 inches); Craig Berryman, second in the 300 hurdles (43.07) and fourth in the 110 hurdles (16.76); Dan Temple, fifth in the 800 (2:13.25) and sixth in the 3,000 (10:11.64); and Dillon Moore, sixth in the 1,500 (4:40.79).

Although no official team scores were kept for the six-team meet, unofficially Baker placed third in both halves of the meet, and was the top Class 3A finisher.

Baker returns to the track Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Pendleton for the Pendleton Invitational.
