Freshman sets two new school records at 3A State track meet

EUGENE Freshman Danielle Jordan scored all 14 of Bakers points Friday and Saturday at the OSAA/U.S. Bank Class 3A State Track and Field Championships.

The state meet was held in conjunction with the Class 4A meet at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.

Jordan set new Baker High School records in the girls 1,500 and 3,000 while placing third and second, respectively, at the state meet.

Jordan placed second in the 3,000 in a time of 10:27.52, breaking her own school record by 2.5 seconds. Her old mark of 10:30.17 was set earlier this season. Jordan broke the BHS 1,500 record four times during the season.

Jordan placed third in the 1,500 at Eugene with a 4:50.36 clocking. Her time broke the six-year-old BHS record of 4:59.9 set in 1995 by Tish Henes.

None of the other seven Baker girls, or Casey Bond, the lone Baker boys competitor, scored points during the meet.

Several did earn personal bests while finishing in the top 12 in their events, however.

The kids did about as well as they could, said Baker coach Erik Johnson. We were happy with what they did.

The girls 4x400 relay of Michelle Evans, Tessa Vergari, Shannon Barker and Jill Nielsen knocked almost three seconds off their previous best, placing ninth in a time of 4:15.91.

Vergari earned a half-second personal best while placing 10th in the 800 with a 2:25.35 clocking.

Tori Black and Tiffany Taylor each placed 12th in their event. Black earned a three-inch PR while vaulting 8 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault. Taylor threw the shot 32 feet, 9 inches.

Barker ran a half-second PR in the 200 with a time of 27.43, but did not place.

Nielsen shaved a second off her best time in the 400 with a 1:03.41, but also didnt place.

Aubri Siex did not compete in the high jump after twisting her knee during warmups.

Bond didnt place in the boys 400, running the event in a time of 53.22.

The girls 14 points tied them with Junction City, Seaside and Madras for 17th in the team standings.
