The queen is dead, long live the queen.
The queen in this case is the Condon girls basketball team. Condon, the four-time defending Class 1A state champions, were gunning for an unprecedented fifth straight title Saturday against South Wasco County.
The Blue Devils almost got there. But a determined South Wasco bunch from Maupin spoiled the party in overtime and celebrated their first state championship in the process.
When the final buzzer sounded in the Baker High School gym, South Wasco was the new OSAA-U.S. Bank Class 1A state girls champion, after defeating Condon 42-38 in overtime.
South Wasco County coach Vince Drago said beating Condon, a Big Sky Conference foe, has been a goal all year for the Redsides.
We said we wanted to be here back when school started in September, said Drago, who has taken six teams to the Class 1A tournament, but earned his first championship Saturday night.
Our wishes turned out OK.
Drago said it was especially gratifying to earn the win against Condon, a team who had defeated the Redsides twice during the regular season.
Its a relief, he said. It was a battle of attrition.
Teresa does such a great job with her kids, Drago said of Condon coach Teresa Humphrey. Theres definitely a mystique about them and it was a tough thing for us to overcome.
I think our kids just believed in each other. We knew it was going to be a war.
Even though Condon didnt get its fifth straight title, South Wasco Countys win kept alive another string. No other Class 1A girls team except a representative of the District 3 Big Sky Conference has won the state title since 1995. Ione won the crown in 1996, Condon 1997 through 2000, and now the Redsides.
South Wasco rode the strong shoulders of 5-foot-11 junior Chelsey Hauser Saturday night. Hausers turnaround jumper in the key with two seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Hauser scored four points and added a key steal. She finished the game with 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting and had 13 rebounds and five steals.
The Redsides won their first title despite shooting just 3 of 22 from the field in the first half, and making just 11 of 25 free throws in the game.
South Wasco did hold a huge advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Blue Devils 49-28.
Condon led by as many as six points, 20-14, in the third quarter. But, South Wasco scored 11 of the next 14 points to take a 29-23 lead with 6:02 left in regulation.
Trailing 32-27 with three minutes left in regulation, Condon rallied by scoring the next seven points for a 34-32 lead with 20 seconds left. Hauser then sent the game into overtime.
Jennifer Snyder led Condon with 19 points.
