Girls soccer team opens with win

Julia Vaughan scored a goal about 30 seconds into the Baker High School girls soccer team’s opener against Pendleton, and the Bulldogs went on to post an easy 7-0 victory at the Baker Sports Complex.

Vaughan scored three more goals against the Bucks.

“We came out fast right off the bat,” said DeeDee Clarke, coach of the Bulldogs. “The girls were passing really well, and they played really good defense. And Julia is a strong force in there.”

Robbie Langrell scored two goals for the Bulldogs, the defending Special District 7 champs, and Ashley Shively added a goal on a corner kick that the Pendleton goalkeeper couldn’t handle.

Baker keeper Kristen Hoopes was called on to make three saves and she made them all.

Keys to victory included Dallas Defrees’ distribution of the ball to the goal-scorers and Mackenzie Warner’s play at stopper with keeping the ball on the Bulldogs’ offensive side of the field, Clarke said. Valerie Freese and Morgan Ward played stout defense in front of Hoopes, Clarke added.

Tuesday’s game marked Baker’s first full-game victory. The Bulldogs also picked up two half-game victories at a jamboree last week.

The girls junior varsity likewise posted a 7-0 win over Pendleton. Abby Baxter matched Vaughan’s prodigious output, scoring four goals. Samantha Overton scored a goal and then sprained her ankle. Shasta Overton completed the Bulldogs’ scoring with a pair of goals.

Both squads are in action again Thursday, hosting Weiser, Idaho. The junior varsity game is at 3 p.m. with the varsity playing afterward at 5 p.m.
