Grizzlies roll past Baker, 43-31

Cold second quarter costly for Baker girls

A cold-shooting offense, and an even colder second quarter spelled defeat for Baker Tuesday in a non-league girls basketball game against Fruitland, Idaho.

Baker outscored the Grizzlies in the other three quarters, but fell 16-2 in the second quarter on the way to a 43-31 defeat in the Baker gym.

“We came out in the second half and played better,” said Baker coach Tim Smith. “But we had a bunch of turnovers in the first half and didn’t take care of the basketball.

“We just need to take care of the ball better,” Smith said. “We’re not where we need to be at this time of the season. And, offensively, we need to find a way to score more.”

Mackenzie Srack scored six of her team-high 11 points in the first quarter to help Baker forge an 8-7 lead.

But Srack’s basket midway through the second quarter was Baker’s only other points before halftime. Meanwhile, Fruitland closed the quarter on a 12-0 run to lead 23-10 at halftime.

Baker then outscored the Grizzlies 21-20 in the second half.

“We just have to take it and learn from it,” Smith said. “Tough games between league games can help you if you let them.

“Mackenzie played well, and the defense from Aly Ogan was great, but otherwise we didn’t play very well.

“We just have to go to La Grande Friday and take care of business.”

Baker (2-8, 1-0) returns to Greater Oregon League play at La Grande Friday evening.
