Haines man wins A. Lakes snowshoe race

The 12th running of the Elkhorn Classic happened Sunday morning at Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort, with a classic cross country ski race and a snowshoe race.

“With all the talk about the snowshoe race that was going on among the snowshoeing crowd that came to the Nordic Center, in the week leading up to the race I expected to see more than two sign up,”  said Brian Vegter, ALMR marketing director. “Either way they had a great time and it was a really close race.”

Josh Cobb, 28, of Haines, won in a time of 40:44.46 followed closely by Mike McInnis, 60, of La Grande in a time of 41:00.45. The snowshoe course was a 7km out and back following the Black Lake Trail.

The 20km ski race had a larger field, with participants from as far away as Bend.

Dan Packman, 45, of Bend, was the overall winner with a time of 1:00:02.36 besting his next closest competitor Dick Knowles, 60, of Haines, by just more than 12 minutes.

The top three men were:

• Dan Packman 1:00:02.36

• Dick Knowles 1:12:14.03

• David Axelrod, 51, La Grande 1:13:25.26

The top two women were:

• Colleen Hessel, 43, Baker City 1:18:53.57
