Hindman Trust donates to Shriners

The 2009 East-West Shrine All-Star football game raised between $100,000 and $110,000 for the Portland hospital.

The 2009 figure was approximately $50,000 more than the amount sent to the hospital in 2008.

Part of the reason for the increase was a $55,000 donation from the Ruth Hindman Trust.

Bob Richmond presented the $55,000 check to East-West Game Chairman Tom Reeves at halftime of the game Aug. 1 at Bulldog Memorial Stadium.

Hindman was born Oct. 22, 1910 in Baker City. She died Jan. 23, 98 years later.

“She believed children are our future,” Richmond said while making the presentation.

“She left a quarter of her estate to the Portland Shrine hospital.”

Richmond said Hindman always believed children are our future.

“Ruth always had children at her mind,” he said. “If she can do what she did, think what we can do to support children.

“Ruth lived in Baker all her life. Her legacy will live on.”

Through her lifetime Hindman worked at Ragsdale Insurance, Basche-Sage Hardware and 26 years as a senior citizen employee for the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest in Baker City. She retired from the Wallowa-Whitman at the age of 92.

Hindman graduated from Baker High School in 1928. She practiced a daily life of good old-fashioned common sense. She especially enjoyed her 57-year membership in Eastern Star. She practiced the virtue of thriftiness — gathering here a little and there a little to provide for the infirmities of old age.

Hindman also donated $1,500 to the Knights Templar Eye Foundation last April, and $15,000 to Oregon Health Sciences University for cancer reseach through the Order of Eastern Star in June.
