Hoop tournament shrinks overnight to four teams
Hoop tournament shrinks overnight to four teams

Sometimes the best laid plans just don’t work out. Just ask Baker boys basketball coach Craig Woods. Woods tried to coordinate a nine-team 24-hour summer basketball tournament at Baker High School Friday and Saturday. The key to that statement was “tried.” With nine teams Woods said each team would play a minimum of five games during the two days. There would be time for video games, sleeping and resting as well. That was before Woods took his players to a camp at Gonzaga University a week ago. When he returned to Baker the tournament field had shrunk to five teams, and then to four. Woods said his first thought was to cancel play. But the remaining teams — Baker, La Grande, Burns and Grant Union — wanted to play anyway. So, Woods constructed a four-team round robin format to be played Friday afternoon and evening.“We started with nine teams and got down to four,” Woods said. “Most of the teams that backed out couldn’t get enough players and others had schedule conflicts.” Baker’s team was a mix of older and younger players. Playing for the Bulldogs were Braden Phillips, Nick Cripe, Jesse Brown, Jordan Curtis, Trenton Howard, Taylor McEnroe, Cooper Brooks, Dane Bachman, Lance Dunn, Ben Baxter and Colby O’Grady. Woods said the Baker club will be playing at a tournament at Seaside this week. |
