ONTARIO — Derek Howerton, a former Baker baseball player, has signed a letter of intent to play for Mayville State, N.D. next spring. Howerton, who played the past two seasons for Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, plans to continue his study of nursing and emergency management technology. The Comets, a member of the Dakota Athletic Conference, had a 16-23 record in 2009. They are coached by Scott Berry, whose 754-418 record is seventh best in NAIA baseball.
The first Baker City Young Life golf tournament is set for Aug. 1 at the Quail Ridge golf course. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided. The tournament will conclude with putting and chipping contests, raffle prize drawings and awards. Cost is $75 per person or $300 per team. The format is a 4-person scramble. There will be competitive and recreational flights. Young Life is a non-denominational ministry that reaches out to junior high and high school kids. It has been active in Baker County since 2000. All profits from the tournament will provide scholarships for kids to attend camp as well as underwrite club expenses throughout the upcoming school year. The annual Miners Jubilee 5K Fun Run/Walk is scheduled Saturday in Baker City. Participants may register at the Baker YMCA Fitness Center, 2021 Main St., that day at 7:15 a.m. The races will begin at 8 a.m. The races are sponsored by the Baker City Subway. Proceeds will benefit the Baker High School track and cross country programs.
MIDLAND, Texas — Right-hander Jared Lansford, a former Baker baseball player, is pitching for the Midland Rockhounds in the Class AA Texas League. In 16 games, Lansford is 0-1 with a 3.22 earned-run average. IN 22.1 innings Lansford has allowed 25 hits, eight runs, walked 15 and struck out 12.
BOISE — Josh Lansford, a former Baker baseball player, is pitching with the Boise Hawks of the Class A short-season Northwest League. Lansford, a right-handed pitcher converted from an infielder, last played in Boise his rookie season of 2006. In seven games, he has pitched 10.1 innings allowing 12 hits and eight runs. He has struck out seven, walked six and has a 1-1 record with a 5.23 earned-run average.
LA GRANDE — Two former Baker baseball players helped La Grande’s Subway A’s American Legion team place seventh at the 12-team Walla Walla tournament last weekend. Grant Marcum and Jordan Harlow slugged four doubles for the A’s. Subway is competing at the district tournament at Pendleton today through Sunday. The district winner advances to the state tournament later this month at Medford.
UNION — The sixth annual East-West Shrine All-Star Football Golf Tournament is planned July 31 at Buffalo Peak Golf Course in Union. The 4-person scramble format is $65 per player.
