Wins were few and far between for the Baker wrestlers Thursday in a Greater Oregon League dual against sixth-ranked La Grande on the Baker mats.

The Bulldogs managed just three wins by decision, and one by double forfeit, on the way to dropping a 61-15 decision.

“We didn’t come to wrestle tonight,” was all Baker coach Dee Gorrell had to say after the match.

“I guess Tuesday we’d better be looking to improve.”

Baker hosts Ontario and Grant Union Tuesday evening.

Andrew Porter (130 pounds), Andrew Gettle (145) and Ted Shaw (189) earned Baker’s only wins against the Tigers.

Porter led Matt Nicholson 4-3 after one period, then traded points with the La Grande wrestler to maintain an 11-10 edge after two rounds.

Porter then earned a two-point reversal to start the third round and made the advantage stand up for the win. Nicholson got an escape at the final buzzer for his final point.

Gettle and La Grande’s Andy Hardenbrook battled to a scoreless draw after one round in their match.

Gettle then took the lead for good when Hardenbrook was called for three straight cautions giving Gettle a penalty point. Gettle then quickly earned a two-point near-fall to take a 3-0 lead into the final round.

Another caution against Hardenbrook gave Gettle his second penalty point to start the third round. Gettle then took the down position in the referee’s position and earned a two-point reversal for a 6-0 lead. Hardenbrook scored his point on a penalty point late in the final round.

Shaw and La Grande’s Tanner Dewitt battled back and forth in their match.

Shaw earned three takedowns and allowed Dewitt to escape twice for a 6-2 lead after one round. Shaw added a takedown and a reversal while allowing Dewitt four points to keep the margin at 10-6 after two rounds.

Shaw then escaped and earned a takedown to build his lead to 13-6 in the fianl two minutes. Dewitt earned an escape late for the final margin.
