One good thing about Tuesday’s volleyball match between Baker and La Grande is that it didn’t count in the Greater Oregon League standings.

A good thing for Baker that is. The Bulldogs lost the OSAA endowment match to La Grande 25-15, 25-19, 25-16.

Both teams entered the match 2-0 in the GOL.

Baker coach Michele McCauley said the Bulldogs had trouble blocking La Grande shots at the net.

“We would almost have been better off not trying to block,” she said.

Baker opened all three game with a small lead, but couldn’t hold on.

In Game 1, Baker forged a 5-1 lead. La Grande’s Kendall Kirkland then stepped to the service line and gave the Tigers a 9-5 advantage.

Baker never led again in the game.

In the second game, Baker built a 5-0 cushion only to have La Grande battle back.

With the game knotted at 15-15, La Grande scored four straight points to take the lead for good.

Baker jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third game but again couldn’t hold the lead.

La Grande built leads of as many as 10 points in completing the sweep.

Kate Averett was 8-for-8 serving and 20-for-26 hitting with six kills for Baker.

Kayla Davis was 9-for-9 serving and 7-for-8 on serve receive.

LaKalyn Thomas and Makenna Bachman each were 11-for-12 serving. Bachman also was 34-of-36 setting with seven assists.

Michelle Freese was 16-of-20 hitting with four kills. Dani McCauley was 23-of-24 setting with five assists.

Baker split the non-varsity matches with La Grande.

Baker won the frosh/soph match 25-18, 25-19, but lost the JV match 25-22, 18-25, 15-7.
