Baker left its bats in the dugout against Pendleton Tuesday.

The Bulldogs managed just three hits on the way to losing a nonleague softball game to the Class 5A Bucks 4-0 at the Baker Sports Complex.

“I told the girls that against Gladstone and Pendleton we were going to see solid pitching,” said Baker coach Alan McCauley.

“We’ve got to make some changes at the plate. I thought most of our girls looked really tense at the plate,” McCauley said.

Baker (3-2) fell into a 2-0 hole in the top of the first inning thanks to two unearned runs.

Two walks, a hit batsman and a fielder’s choice loaded the bases for Pendleton with one out. Then, two Baker errors allowed the two runs to score.

Baker finished the game with three errors, but also dropped four other foul ball popups that extended innings.

“I’m going to have to hit some fly balls during practice I guess,” McCauley said.

Baker was hitless until the third inning when Taylor Ellis and Sierra Howerton rapped back-to-back two-out singles.

The Bulldogs’ only other hit was a one-out single by Jessi Stephens in the fourth inning.

Pendleton added single runs in the third and seventh innings.

Darryn McCauley took the loss, allowing seven hits, striking out seven and walking two.

Baker opens Greater Oregon League play Saturday when the Bulldogs host Ontario in a doubleheader at the Sports Complex.
