Mac-Hi beats Baker girls

Baker has picked the most inopportune time to go on a four-game losing streak. The streak reached four games Friday when the Bulldogs fell 48-36 to Mac-Hi in the Greater Oregon League girls basketball regular-season finale for both teams. The loss also means Baker finishes third in the regular-season standings and will host the Pioneers in the first round of the district playoffs Tuesday at 6 p.m. Baker must win that game for its season to continue. “We know what to expect from Mac-Hi,” said Baker coach Tim Smith. “We just have to do what’s expected from us. “We have to regroup. It’s a one-game season now.” Baker had defeated Mac-Hi by 14 and 17 points in two previous meetings before Friday. But, Friday, Baker couldn’t find its game. “We never really got into the flow of the game,” Smith said. “Mac-Hi went into a stall in the first quarter and pulled us out of our matchup defense. Then when we went to man we never really got into the flow. It wasn’t a very pretty game.” Baker’s problems were added to by the fact that the Bulldogs shot just 8-of-47 from the field. “It wasn’t one person, or one thing,” Smith said. “Then, when things started snowballing everything just went down hill.” Thanks, in part, to Mac-Hi’s stall tactics the first quarter ended with the Pioneers leading just 3-2. And, despite its cold shooting, Baker managed to stay close most of the game. Baker trailed by just six points midway through the fourth quarter. But, the Bulldogs scored just three more points the rest of the way. Mackenzie Warner led Baker with 11 points. Whitney Phillips and Aly Ogan each added nine.
