McKenzie girls win title

McKenzie outscored St. Paul 20-7 in the fourth quarter Saturday to come from behind and claim the school’s first Class 1A state girls basketball championship.
The Eagles (28-1) of Finn Rock earned their first title, while St. Paul (22-6) placed second for the third time in seven title game appearances.
Trailing 28-27 with 6:24 left in the game, McKenzie scored 10 straight points to take a 37-28 edge.
Karissa Harbick led the surge with seven points.
Taya Harbick gave McKenzie a quick 7-0 lead in the first quarter before St. Paul closed to within 7-4 at the break.
St. Paul’s Sarah McKay then scored seven points in the second period as the Buckaroos battled back to tie the game at 14-14 at halftime.
The game was still tied at 18-18 with 5:34 left in the third quarter. McKay and Tessa Brentano then each scored two points to give St. Paul a 22-18 advantage.
The Buckaroos kept that margin intact until Harbick scored near the end of the quarter to pull McKenzie within 26-24 entering the fourth quarter.
Harbick hit a three-point basket a minute into th efourth quarter to give McKenzie a 27-26 lead.
Katie Jo Coleman answered for St. Paul with 6:24 left to give the Buckaroos their last lead.
St. Paul could get no closer than six points after that.
Harbick led McKenzie with 22 points. Taya Harbick added 10.
McKay led St. Paul with 13 points.
