Mohawk splits third-place games

Mohawk split the third place games at the Class 1A state boys and girls basketball tournament Saturday at Baker High School.

The Indians rallied late to nip Damascus Christian 44-43 in the boys third place game. Crane defeated the Indians 63-39 in the girls third place game.


Boys game

Mohawk 44, Damascus Christian 43

Cord Wilkins’ two free throws with 15 seconds left in overtime proved to be the winning margin for Mohawk.

Wilkins’ free throws gave the Indians a 44-40 advantage. Damascus Christian’s Bobby Waldie then hit a three-point basket with 10 seconds left to cut the deficit to one points, 44-43.

Waldie then fouled Mohawk’s Anthony Wallace with six seconds left. Wallace missed both free throws, but Waldie’s desperation three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.

The game was close all the way. The teams tied 10-10 after one period. Damascus Christian edged ahead 21-20 at halftime, and still led 34-32 after three period.s

Mohawk tied the game at 38-38 and sent the affair into overtime with 1:14 left in regulation on a C.J. Vian basket.

Wallace hit a jumper with 3:26 left in overtime to give Mohawk the lead for good.

Vian led Mohawk with 14 points. Wallace added 12.

Waldie topped Damascus Christian with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Michael Gunderson added 12 points.

Girls game

Crane 63, Mohawk 39

Leading 8-6 after one quarter, Crane exploded for a 19-7 second period to increase its lead to 27-13 at halftime.

Natalie Bentz scored five points to help the Mustangs score the first 11 points of the second quarter.

Bentz finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds. September O’Crowley added 18 points and nine boards.

Emily Gonzalez led Mohawk with 16 points.
