Nixyaawii wins 1A girls title

Neither Nixyaawii or Hosanna Christian had ever won a Class 1A state girls basketball championship before Saturday’s meeting at Baker High School.

Nixyaawii last appeared at the tournament in 2008, and Hosanna Christian in 2009. Both lost  their first two games.

Saturday, before a loud packed house in the BHS gym, Nixyaawii kicked its game into high gear and rolled to a 75-50 victory.

With the score tied at 5-5 in the first quarter, the Golden Eagles went on an 8-0 run that broke the game open. Kanisha Perry and Makayla McKay each scored three points in the spurt, and Kristi Miller two.

Chelsey Minthorn and Jessica Simpson each later added a three-point basket, and Cyrene Red Elk a two-pointer as Nixyaawii built a 21-11 lead after one quarter.

The teams then put their running shoes on, sprinting up and down the floor in teh second period. Nixyaawii finished the period with 23 points, and Hosanna Christian 20 leaving the Golden Eagle up 43-31 at halftime.

Perry led Nixyaawii with 10 points. Simpson, Minthorn and McKay each added nine.

Abby Anderson and Carly Bigby each had nine for Hosanna Christian.

Nixyaawii then continued to widenits lead in the second half, outscoring the Lady Lions 32-19 in the second half.

Simpson led Nixyaawii with 20 points and five steals. Perry added 19 points and 10 rebounds, Minthorn 13 points, and Miller 12 points, seven assists and five steals.

Mary Matchett led Hosanna Christian with 19 points, four assists and three steals. Anderson added 12 points and 13 rebounds.
