Ogan's big fourth-quarter leads Baker girls to win

Baker rallied from a third-quarter deficit Friday to hand La Grande a 46-42 loss in Greater Oregon League girls basketball play at BHS.

Baker trailed 31-23 at the end of the third quarter, then scored the first 10 points of the final quarter.

Aly Ogan led the Bulldogs, scoring five of her game-high 15 points in the 10-0 run. Ogan’s driving layin down the key knotted the game at 31-31 with 6:38 left. Mackenzie Warner, who also scored 15 points, then gave Baker the lead with a basket off a feed from Haley Adams with 4:51 remaining.

La Grande scored with 4:39 left to tie the game at 33-33, but two Ogan free throws with 3:52 remaining gave Baker the lead for good.

A basket by Whitney Phillips, a three-pointer from Ogan, and an Adams free throw boosted Baker’s cushion to 41-34 with 1:36 left.

Baker still led by seven, 46-39, with 5.7 seconds left. A La Grande three-pointer at the buzzer completed the scoring.

“We came out down by eight late in the third quarter, then went on that 10-0 run,” said Baker coach Tim Smith.

“We regrouped. As a team we really grew tonight. We figured out we can get it done when we need to.”

Smith said he was especially pleased with the Bulldogs’ play in the fourth quarter.

“Aly Ogan just made clutch shot after clutch shot,” Smith said. “She gets 15 points, 12 in the fourth quarter.

“And, Mackenzie Warner was just steady getting 15 as well. We expect that out of Mackenzie, and we look for at least one other player to step up in the scoring column.

“For the most part our starting five played a lot of minutes, and got it done,” Smith said. “I’m just pleased with the effort tonight.”

Baker trailed 7-2 in the first quarter before a basket by Adams and a three-pointer by Warner helped the Bulldogs pull into an 8-8 tie at the break.

La Grande then limited the Bulldogs to just one field goal in the second period to take a 20-15 halftime edge.

La Grande increased its lead to as many as 10 points in the third period before baskets by Warner and Ogan helped the Bulldogs get to within 31-23 at the break.

Then, five points by Ogan and a three-point basket by Mackenzie Srack pulled Baker even at 31-31 with 6:38 left in the game.
