Ontario takes two from Bulldog girls

ONTARIO — Ontario proved to be rude hosts Friday, sweeping Baker 5-1, 5-4 in a Greater Oregon League softball doubleheader.

The sweep leaves Baker in third place in the GOL with a 2-4 record at the midpoint of the league season.

Baker managed just four hits in each game Friday.

“We’ve got to hit the ball,” said Baker coach Al McCauley.

“(Ontario pitcher Jenny) Yano was throwing a rise ball and we were getting under it. We’ve got to get back to hitting the ball better.”

In Game 1, Baker fell behind 5-0 after two innings as Ontario got to Baker starter Tori Brown. Yano drove in three of the runs with a pair of doubles.

Baker’s lone run came in the fourth. Sierra Howerton reached base on an error and was sacrificed to second. She went to third on a single by DJ McCauley, and scored on a Brown single.

Brown struck out 10 Tigers and walked three.

Baker took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game.

Howerton was hit by a pitch, and later scored on a McCauley single.

Ontario took a 2-1 edge in the third inning. In the process, the Tigers knocked Baker starting pitcher Mackenzie Srack out of the game when she was hit in the ribs by a line drive. McCauley said Srack appeared to suffer only bruised ribs.

Trailing 3-1 in the fifth, Baker tied the game at 3-3. Aubree Shepherd walked and Howerton was again hit by a pitch. One out later McCauley doubled both runners home.

Baker took a 4-3 advantage in the sixth thanks to an Ontario error.

But, the Bulldogs couldn’t hold the lead.

Yano’s two-out, bases-loaded single scored two runs for the win.

Yano struck out 11 Bulldogs in Game 2.

Baker hosts Fruitland, Idaho, in a single non-league game Tuesday. The Bulldogs return to GOL action Saturday when they host Mac-Hi in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Baker Sports Complex.
