Ontario tennis nips Bulldogs

Baker came close, but not close enough Friday, losing a district tennis match to Ontario at the Ash Grove courts.

The Bulldogs lost both the boys and girls matches by identical scores of 3-2.

“Ontario has two good girls doubles teams,” said Baker coach George Keister.

“It’s going to take some top matches to beat them, but I think we’re capable of doing it.

“And, our No. 1 and No. 2 singles played well against Ontario,” Keister said.

Baker lost both doubles matches in straight sets.

Courtney Petry lost the No. 1 singles in three sets. Robbie Langrell split the first two sets, then rallied to win the third set to win her No. 2 singles match.

Helen Galiszewski won the No. 3 singles in two sets.

On the boys side, Baker swept the two doubles matches.

Robert Schmeits and Dan Sizer swept the No. 1 doubles in straight sets. Jordan Curtis and Trent Howard did the same in the No. 2 doubles.

“Both of our doubles teams played very well,” Keister said.

Gus Hansen, playing No. 1 singles after playing No. 3 most of the season, lost in three sets.

“Gus is playing pretty tough,” Keister said. “He’s playing some close matches. As he continues to improve he could surprise some people.”

Baker will be busy on its home courts this week, playing three times. The Bulldogs host Vale Tuesday, La Grande Thursday and Fruitland, Idaho, Saturday.
