POWDER VALLEY vs. IONE (boys): Badgers move a step closer to championship

Powder Valley moved a step closer to the championship game of the OSAA-U.S. Bank Class 1A boys state basketball tournament Wednesday.

The Badgers, 23-1, rolled past Ione 83-64 in the opening round of the tournament at Baker High School.

Powder Valley plays Days Creek in the championship semifinals Friday at 3 p.m. Ione played Blanchet in the consolation semifinals this morning.

Against Ione, Powder Valley used its full court pressure to convert several steals into easy baskets in the first quarter.

Brody Turner, Zach Culver, Trace Baxter and Riley Martin each scored four points in the period as the Badgers built a 19-11 lead.

Powder Valley increased its lead to as many as 11 points early in the second period. Justin Heffernan led the way with six points.

Then, just as quickly, Ione battled back midway through the second period. Aaron Brown and Brooks Rea each scored five points in the quarter to help the Cardinals cut the deficit to just four points at halftime, 32-28.

But that was as close as Ione would get. After combining for just 10 points and nine turnovers in the first half, Turner and Culver went to work in the third period.

Turner scored 11 points in the period, and Culver seven to help Powder Valley build its lead back to 55-46 at the break.

Powder increased its lead despite nine points by Iones Brad Burright in the period.

Turner and Culver continued to hold the hot hands in the fourth period. Culver banged home 13 points, and Turner seven in the final eight minutes.

Culver led Powder Valley with 26 points, 20 in the second half. He also dished out five assists and grabbed seven rebounds.

Turner added 23 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Heffernan came off the bench to add 11 points.

Brown led Ione with 17 points, three assists and two blocked shots. Burright added 14 points and eight rebounds, and Adam Neiffer 10 points and six assists.
