Almost always, a baseball team is happy to turn a double play.

But once in a while, only a triple play is good enough.


Locals to compete at YHEC nationals

Annie Oakley and Wild Bill Hickok would be proud of five local teenage gunslingers.

The 2013 NRA Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) will be held at the NRA’s Wittington Center in Raton, N.M., July 21-26. Four of the 10 participants representing Oregon are from Baker County. 

Brian Staebler-Siewell and Nicholas Vowell, both 17, are on the senior team. Sarah Spaugh, 17, is first alternate for the Senior team and competing as an individual. Ben Spaugh, 15, is on the junior team. Braden Staebler-Siewell,15, is second alternate for the senior team and competing as an individual.


Baker all-stars lose heartbreaker championship game


Baker's 11- and 12-year-old Little League baseball all-stars lose a heartbreaking championship game to Pendleton in the district tournament Wednesday at Wade Williams Field in Baker City.

Baker, the visiting team, trailed Pendleton 3-1 entering the top of the sixth inning.

Baker scored one run to get within 3-2.

Pendleton ended the game with a double play that easily could have given Baker the tying run.

Morgan Bennett advanced to third base with one one. Jackson Rohner hit a line drive to center fielder. The center fielder not only made the catch, but he threw a strike to home to get Bennett for the final out.

Pendleton's 10- and 11-year-old team also won the district title by beating Baker 15-1 in four innings on Wednesday.

Baker all-stars advance to championship game


Baker’s 11-12-year-old all-star baseball team rallied from a three-run deficit in the last inning Tuesday to nip La Grande, 20-19, and advance to today’s championship game at the Little League district tournament.

Baker will play Pendleton at 6:30 p.m. at Wade Williams Field. Both teams are unbeaten in the tournament.

Baker, the home team on Tuesday, trailed La Grande 19-16 entering the bottom of the sixth.

Other tournament action this week:

11-12-YEAR-OLDS

Monday’s game: Baker 23, Union County 0

Anoah Kuhl, Dawson Linscott and Brenden Golar each had two hits to lead the Baker rout, which ended by 10-run rule after four innings.

9-10-YEAR-OLDS

Monday’s game: Baker 14, Harney County 4

Zander Arriaga had a double and a triple and stole three bases, and Ethan Myers and Dawson Clarke each had two hits for Baker, which scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to end the game by 10-run rule.

Baker led 11-0 after three innings, but Harney County scored four runs in the top of the fourth.

11-YEAR-OLDS

Baker rebounded from a 17-7 loss on Monday to beat Pilot Rock Tuesday.

Baker will play Pendleton again today at 4 p.m. If Baker wins, the two teams would play again for the chamipionship Friday at 3 p.m.

Powder Valley will send eight track and field athletes to the Class 1A state meet Thursday through Saturday at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene.


Baker softball, baseball fail to qualify for play-in games


Baker's baseball and softball seasons have ended with both teams failing to qualify for a Class 4A play-in game.

The Oregon School Activities Association has posted the eight baseball and softball play-in games on its website, www.osaa.org.

Those games are scheduled for today and Friday.

In softball, La Grande will play host to LaSalle Prep at 3:30 today. Mac-Hi has a first-round bye.

In baseball, La Grande will play host to South Umpqua Friday at 5 p.m. Ontario has a first-round bye.


Baker hosts invitational meet
