BHS BASEBALL: Bucks top Bulldogs


PENDLETON — Pendleton jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning then held Baker off for a 7-3 nonleague baseball win Monday at Bob White Field.

The Bucks scored all four runs with two outs.

“It was kind of like we weren’t really ready to play,” said Baker coach Dan Blankenship.

“But, the kids battled back. Take away that first inning and it was a good game.”

Baker cut the deficit to 4-1 in the third inning. Dan Stinson doubled and scored on a double by Mason Cline.

Then, down 7-1, the Bulldogs tallied twice in the sixth.

Dillon Blankenship walked and advanced on Kody Younger’s single. Both scored on a double by Chace Dixon.

Younger was Baker’s starting pitcher, taking the loss.

The Bulldogs travel to Burns for a single game this afternoon.

BHS SOFTBALL: Caldwell sweeps Bulldogs

Caldwell used a pair of big innings to sweep Baker in a nonleague softball doubleheader Tuesday at the Baker Sports Complex.

The Cougars scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning of opener to rally for a 9-5 win, then used a 5-run fourth inning in Game 2 to hand Baker an 8-5 loss.

In Game 1, Caldwell built a 2-0 lead after two innings before Baker rallied with four runs in the third inning.

Taylor McAdams had a bases-loaded RBI single to drive home one run. The other runs scored on errors.

Then, after Caldwell cut Baker’s lead to 4-3, the Bulldogs added a single run in the sixth.

Juliana Delatorre opened the inning with a double and later scored on Sierra Howerton’s sacrifice fly.

Caldwell then used five hits, two Baker errors and three walks to score six times in the top of the seventh.

In Game 2, Baker took a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Howerton hit a solo home run and Darion Grove added a two-run blast.

Caldwell answered with five runs in the top of the fourth on three hits, two walks, a hit batter and an error.

Courtney Raley’s RBI single in the fifth inning pulled Baker to within 5-4.

But, again Caldwell answered, scoring three runs on three hits in the sixth.

McAdams had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

BHS BASEBALL: Bulldogs sweep Scappoose

Baker evened its nonleague baseball record at 1-1 Monday with a 10-1 thumping of Scappoose at the Baker Sports Complex.

Scappoose (4-6) arrived in Baker City after losing two games at Ontario and sweeping two games from La Grande.

Baker, which lost earlier to Weiser, played much better, according to coach Dan Blankenship.

“We swung the bats well, and ran the bases much better,” Blankenship said.

“The kids have put a lot of time into getting better after the Weiser game."

It took Baker almost half the game to figure out Weiser’s pitcher, but when the Bulldogs did their bats got hot.

Baker (2-0) trailed 4-0 after three innings then erupted for nine runs to defeat Weiser 9-6 in the nonleague softball game at the Baker Sports Complex.

“After I kind of blew my cool the girls finally made the adjustments we needed,” said Baker coach Al McCauley.

“Their pitcher was throwing a two-seam fast ball that was moving outside. Then, when we finally decided to stay back and hit the ball to right field we starting hitting the ball."

Baker received solid pitching but had some shaky hitting and fielding in its season-opening nonleague baseball game against Weiser Tuesday at the Baker Sports Complex.

The Bulldogs dropped the contest 6-2.

“It was a typical first game,” said Baker coach Dan Blankenship.

“I thought our pitchers threw well enough. We just didn’t hit the ball well enough and weren’t solid enough in the field."

BHS TENNIS: Baker sweeps Payette

Baker opened its nonleague tennis season by sweeping Payette at Payette Tuesday.

Baker won the boys match 4-1 and the girls match 3-2.

Baker boys coach George Keister said Payette’s best two players played doubles so Baker teamed its No. 1 and No. 2 singles players against the Pirate duo.

Baker’s Lukas Huggins and Ivan Hansen defeated Payette’s Matt Bake and Devin Soelberg 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6).

Keister said Huggins and Hansen trailed 5-1 in the tie-breaker before rallying.

Hunter Stone and Matthew Barnes of Baker won the No. 2 doubles match 6-3, 6-0.

Jesse Burk, playing No. 1 singles, won his match 6-4, 6-1. Isaac Mansuetti won the No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0.

In girls action, Baker swept the doubles matches and the No. 2 singles.

Devon Galiszewski and Delaney Kee won the No. 1 doubles match 6-0, 6-1.

Lena Bowers and Hannah Wilson won the No. 2 doubles 6-2, 6-0.

Kaitlyn Uttenreuther won the No. 2 sinles match 6-4, 6-2.

Damascus Christian girls, City Christian boys win Class 1A state titles

Ana Wakefield calmly sank two free throws with 23 seconds left in the game Saturday to lift top-ranked Damascus Christian to a 46-44 victory over Condon/Wheeler in the Class 1A state girls basketball title game at Baker High School.

In a game that saw six ties and four lead changes, Damascus Christian freshman Hannah Forrar hit a basket with 1:36 left in regulation to knot the score at 44-44.

Then, after Condon/Wheeler’s Courtney MacInnxes missed a three-point try, the teams traded turnovers until Wakefield was fouled.

Following Wakefield’s free throws, Condon/Wheeler had one last attempt to send the game into overtime, but a shot by MacInnes was off the mark.
