Country Christian, Imbler and Southwest Christian joined Joseph as quarterfinal winners at the Class 1A state girls basketball tournament Thursday at Baker High School.

Country Christian defeated Hosanna Christian 31-27. Imbler topped Adrian 63-50. Southwest Christian defeated Griswold 38-28.

Portland Lutheran and Columbia Christian advanced to the boys consolation final Thursday.

Portland Lutheran defeated South Wasco County 55-50 and Columbia Christian topped St. Paul 60-21 in consolation semifinals at Baker High School.

The top-ranked Badgers trailed by 10 points at halftime before rallying for a 57-45 win over Columbia Christian at Baker High School.

In the other quarterfinal games Wednesday, Crane defeated St. Paul 70-50, Mohawk topped South Wasco County 86-72 and Days Creek stopped Portland Lutheran 57-48.

“The kids had a good week of practice,” said Baker coach Craig Woods.

“With the junior varsity kids we brought up it allowed our regular seven or eight guys to practice as a unit more than we have all season. That was probably one of the factors tonight.”

Four of the five Baker wrestlers competing at the Class 4A state tournament placed in their weight divisions Saturday.

“Our Fantastic Four, all the guys who returned from last year, placed,” said Baker coach Dee Gorrell.

“Everybody did well. They all went deep into the semifinals. I’m really proud of them. It was a nice way to end the year.”

Baker will host North Bend Tuesday in the first round of the Class 4A boys basketball playoffs.

Baker (17-7) enters the game as the Greater Oregon League runnerup. North Bend (12-12) enters the playoffs as the Far West League third-place team.

Baker’s Greater Oregon League champion girls basketball team will have to wait until Wednesday to find out who they will play in the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

Dennis took second at 171 pounds when he lost 5-4 to three-time defending champion Caleb Cardwell of Lowell in the title match.

“It was quite a championship match,” said Pine-Eagle coach Blake Dennis.

On paper the No. 1 Powder Valley boys basketball team looks much better than Nixyaawii.

Baker’s “Fabulous Five” wrestlers got off to a strong start Thursday at the Class 4A state wrestling tournament at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

Four of the five advanced to today’s quarterfinals, and the other is still active in consolation action.
